Experienced Legal Divorce Mediator
Are you considering divorce?
Divorce is one of the most emotionally challenging events in life. It often brings a mix of confusion, sadness, disappointment, relief, guilt, pain, ambivalence, anger, and blame.
When you're living abroad as an international, going through a divorce can be even more complex—for both partners and any children involved.
My name is Esther Koene, and I am an experienced Legal Divorce Mediator.
I specialise in guiding expats, living in the Netherlands, through the divorce process. As a legal mediator, I help you end your relationship in a respectful and thoughtful way, with as little emotional and legal damage as possible, especially when it comes to your children and your future co-parenting relationship.
The goal is to create clear, solid agreements that provide stability and a secure foundation for the future.
My experience
I have lived abroad with my family for extended periods and understand firsthand the complex issues internationals face. I have also witnessed the significant impact divorce can have on all family members within an expat family.
As a legal mediator, I guide internationals through their divorce with the aim of helping both parties reach solid agreements on all important matters (children, assets, maintenance, pensions). These agreements are formalized in a Parenting Plan and a Divorce Agreement, which are submitted to the Dutch court.

Legal Divorce Mediation
Mediation means that, with the guidance of a mediator, you and your partner work together to find tailor-made solutions for all the important issues at hand. The goal is to reach agreements that are acceptable to everyone involved. This is especially important if you have children, as clear and workable arrangements need to be made for their well-being.
A mediator is completely neutral and impartial and will not take sides or make decisions on any conflicts.
What are the benefits of mediation in (international) divorce?
- Mediation is significantly faster and much more affordable than lengthy court proceedings involving two lawyers.
- You work together to create agreements on all important matters that truly fit your situation, rather than having decisions imposed by a judge.
- Both of you have equal input in the process.
- The solutions reached are sustainable because they come from mutual agreement with the mediator’s support.
- Especially when children are involved, mediation helps maintain a workable and positive co-parenting relationship after the divorce.
